Is Oatmeal Good For You?

Is Oatmeal good for you? It’s everyone’s favorite alternative to sugary cereals in the morning, or just a filling afternoon meal, but there’s a lot of confusion about the health benefits of oatmeal. We’re here today to hopefully alleviate some of that confusion, and make it easy to figure out if oatmeal is the right choice for your diet.

What is Oatmeal?

Oatmeal is a meal typically eaten in the morning, and is made up of oat groats in many different forms. Ground, crushed, rolled or steel-cut are among the many differently options for oatmeal, each with their own benefits. Although typically meant for consumption, oatmeal has also seen use in bathwater to help deal with various skin conditions, like chicken pox or eczema.

While oatmeal is typically cooked over a stove, there are also plenty of instant oatmeal variants on the market that allow for a quick, microwavable snack. Oatmeal is also most commonly served with chopped fruits to add to its taste.

Is Oatmeal Good For You?

Part of what makes oatmeal such a great morning food is that it is loaded with carbohydrates and protein that gives you the needed energy to get through your day. The slow-digesting nature of the carbohydrates allows for energy to be slow-dripped to your body throughout your morning, as opposed to sugar which may give you a momentary boost in energy, only to crash you shortly after.

Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, oatmeal is a fantastic source for soluble fiber, which is not only good for you but it allows for the food to feel very filling. High-fiber foods are also good for heart health, which makes this food not only heart-warming, but potentially heart-saving. And, because oatmeal is often accompanied with various fruit toppings or honey, you can very easily choose what other healthy additions you want to add to your meal.

So, is oatmeal good for you? You bet it is!

Which Oatmeal Should I Get?

Oatmeal is a wonderful food that is loaded with positive health ramifications, but unfortunately not all oatmeal is good for you. The ever-popular instant oatmeals that are on the market are usually drenched with packets of flavored-sugar and is really doing more harm than good, however if you know what to look there are certainly healthy oatmeals there to be found. Here are some of my favorite oatmeal choices.

Rolled Oats The Way You Want Them
If you’re looking for a tasty oatmeal that is all natural with no preservatives or chemical additives, then Bob’s Red Mill Rolled Oats are an excellent choice for oatmeal fans that are looking to get off the instant brands and on something that is nutritious and delicious. With only 1g of sugar, and loaded in dietary fiber, carbs and protein, these are my personal favorite choice for oatmeal in the morning.

Another great thing about these oats in particular, is that they come in a pack of four 32-ounce packages. Yes, that’s 128 total ounces which is sure to last a long time and well-worth the price. They taste great, and the pricing is exceptional for just how much you’re getting in return, which makes this my go-to oatmeal.

A Quicker Oatmeal That’s Still Good For You
Maybe you’re the type that has to get out of the house early in the morning, and you don’t have a lot of time to make breakfast, but still love oatmeal. If that’s the case, you might want to try Nature’s Path Organic Instant Oatmeal. Unlike many of the instant Quaker brands you’ll see in stores, the Nature’s Path instants are 100% organic, contains no trans-fat and contains just one gram of sugars.

The plain, original flavor of the oatmeal also means you can easily add in your own toppings, like chopped bananas, strawberries, or milk and honey.
